What happened here?

Bon Scott is buried at Fremantle Cemetery at 1 Carrington Street in Fremantle -- the port city where he grew up after emigrating from Scotland at age six and where his parents continued to live after his death. He died in London on February 19, 1980, and his body was repatriated to Western Australia for burial. The grave in Section RSL C is marked with a simple granite headstone inscribed 'Ronald Belford Scott / Bon / 9.7.46 -- 19.2.80 / AC/DC / Rest In Peace.' His parents and other family members are buried nearby.

Fremantle Cemetery is a large Victorian-era burial ground a short walk from the city centre, established in 1879. It is heritage-listed and still in active use. The Bon Scott grave is one of its most visited sites and is well-signposted for fans making the pilgrimage. The setting is characteristically Fremantle: open sky, limestone soil, the sound of the sea not far away, the particular flat light of the Perth coastal plain. It feels like an appropriate resting place for someone who grew up running around this city.

The grave receives regular visits from fans who leave guitar picks, bottles of beer (some full, some emptied in a toast), handwritten notes, and AC/DC paraphernalia. Fremantle Cemetery staff have occasionally had to address the offerings -- some fans are more respectful than others -- but the grave remains accessible and well-maintained. It is typically visited as part of the broader Fremantle Bon Scott circuit that includes the harbour statue, the mural near the Federal Hotel, and Fremantle Prison.
