What happened here?

In August 1976, AC/DC sat down for an interview with Doug Crawford from the ABC's Countdown on James Street in London's Covent Garden. The clip has become one of the most beloved pieces of rock 'n' roll footage ever filmed — not for anything the band said, but for Bon Scott's effortless, larrikin swagger as he wandered through the market in a pair of cut-off denim shorts with a banana tucked into his waistband.

While the younger members of AC/DC trailed behind, Scott held court — charming, funny, and completely in his element on a London street. At one point he stole a banana from a fruit stall. The whole interview captured the band at a pivotal moment: they were midway through their first serious assault on the UK market, playing pub gigs and club shows to build a following from the ground up.

At the end of the clip, the band duck into the Nag's Head pub at 10 James Street — right outside Covent Garden Tube station. The pub is still there today, and the street itself has barely changed. The old market buildings, the narrow lanes, and the shopfronts that form the backdrop of the interview are all still recognisable.

Scott would be dead less than four years later, found in a car on Overhill Road in East Dulwich on 19 February 1980. Moments like the Covent Garden interview — loose, funny, full of life — are part of what makes his loss so keenly felt by fans decades on. The banana, the shorts, the grin: it's Bon at his most Bon.
