What happened here?

Exile in London

Bob Marley moved to 42 Oakley Street in early 1977 after fleeing Jamaica following an assassination attempt in 1976. He and The Wailers lived together in the four-storey terraced house in Chelsea, and it was here that they recorded the later stages of the album Exodus.

Their daily routine included rising late, playing football with bandmates in Battersea Park, then spending long hours in the studio. Marley regarded London as a second base during this period. He lived at the house until around June 1977.

Exodus

Exodus featured "Jamming", "Waiting in Vain", "Three Little Birds", and "One Love". It is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums ever made.

Visiting Today

An English Heritage blue plaque was erected on the building in 2019. It reads: "BOB MARLEY 1945–1981 Singer and Songwriter lived here in 1977". The house is a private residence.
