What happened here?

Blink-182 formed in Poway, California — a suburban community in San Diego's North County — in 1992, when Tom DeLonge met drummer Scott Raynor and eventually bassist Mark Hoppus (who grew up in Ridgecrest, further north in California). DeLonge and Raynor were Poway High School students; the band practised in garages and played local shows across San Diego County before building a following on the Southern California punk circuit. Their early releases on independent labels were rough but energetic, and by the time Hoppus's uncle's label Cargo Music helped distribute their material, they were developing the melodic punk-pop sound that would eventually make them one of the best-selling rock acts of the late 1990s and 2000s.

Blink-182's commercial breakthrough came with "Dude Ranch" (1997) on MCA Records and exploded with "Enema of the State" (1999), which produced "What's My Age Again?," "All the Small Things," and "Adam's Song" — songs that defined the sound and attitude of a generation of suburban teenage experience. The band's blend of juvenile humour, skatepunk energy, and occasional genuine emotional directness made them hugely influential on subsequent pop-punk acts including Fall Out Boy, Paramore, and Neck Deep.

Poway itself — a comfortable, sprawling suburb of San Diego — has no formal Blink-182 heritage site, though the band's origins there are well documented. The Southern California suburban landscape that produced Blink — strip malls, skate parks, garage band culture — is precisely the environment their music describes and comes from. The band has continued performing and recording into the 2020s, with Tom DeLonge's return to the lineup in 2022 marking a reunion that drew enormous enthusiasm from fans who grew up with their records.
