What happened here?
Located in the heart of Birmingham's Westside district, Black Sabbath Bridge is the ultimate pilgrimage site for heavy metal fans. The bridge crosses over the Broad Street Tunnel on the BCN Main Line canal, and was officially renamed in honour of the band who formed just a few miles away in Aston in 1968.
The centrepiece of the bridge is the Heavy Metal Bench — a handmade steel monument featuring the faces of Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. The bench was the brainchild of Dubai-based architect and Black Sabbath superfan Mohammed Osama, who campaigned for years to see it realised. The work of Egyptian artist Tarek Abelkawi, it was officially unveiled on 26 June 2019 by Iommi and Butler themselves.
All four original members of Black Sabbath grew up within a short distance of each other — and of Villa Park — in the Aston district of Birmingham. Ozzy Osbourne was born at 14 Lodge Road, while Iommi's family ran a shop on Park Lane that became a popular neighbourhood meeting spot. The industrial landscape of post-war Birmingham — its factories, foundries, and working-class streets — shaped the heavy, grinding sound that would define an entire genre.
The bench quickly became one of Birmingham's most popular attractions, with fans travelling from around the world to sit alongside the metal likenesses of the classic lineup. The constant stream of visitors eventually took its toll, and the bench underwent a major refurbishment before being reinstalled. It remains one of the most photographed spots in the city.
The bridge and bench sit within a broader stretch of Birmingham that has embraced its heavy metal heritage. Together with landmarks like the Ozzy Osbourne mural and the nearby streets where the band once rehearsed, they form a circuit that fans can walk to trace the origins of the music that changed rock forever.
