Bill Monroe Music Park — Bean Blossom, Indiana

Bill Monroe's Music Park and Campground at 5163 State Road 135 N near Bean Blossom, Indiana, is the oldest continuously operated outdoor bluegrass festival site in the world — a property Monroe purchased in 1951 and used to host his annual Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival from 1967 onwards. The festival, held each June, became one of the defining events on the bluegrass calendar: a gathering where Monroe presided as patriarch, performing alongside the next generation of musicians he had mentored or inspired, sustaining the social and musical community that bluegrass required to survive as a living tradition rather than a preserved curiosity.

Monroe's decision to purchase the Bean Blossom property — a former tourist attraction in the scenic hills of Brown County, Indiana — reflected his understanding that bluegrass needed a physical home as well as a recording legacy. The festival created the template for the outdoor bluegrass gathering that spread across the United States in the 1970s and 1980s: camping alongside the music, multiple stages, a mixture of established stars and emerging talent, and an audience that participated as a community rather than merely consuming a product. Jerry Garcia, who became a devoted bluegrass enthusiast, attended the Bean Blossom festival in the early 1970s and described it as a revelatory experience.

The Bean Blossom Music Park continues to operate under the stewardship of the Bill Monroe Memorial Music Park, hosting festivals and events throughout the year. The Brown County hills surrounding the site are among the most scenic in Indiana, and the property retains much of its original character including the stage where Monroe performed for the last decades of his life. Bean Blossom is approximately 45 minutes south of Indianapolis, in the same area as the artists' community of Nashville, Indiana.
