The private ranch where the King of Soul rests in peace

Get DirectionsIn the mid-1960s, at just 24 years old, Otis Redding purchased a 300-acre ranch in Jones County, north of Macon. He called it the Big O Ranch. It was his retreat from the relentless pace of touring and recording — a place where he could ride horses, fish and spend time with his family. The ranch represented the life he was building beyond music, rooted in the rural Georgia landscape he had grown up in.
While many of Redding's landmarks are tied to his music and his tragic death, the Big O Ranch is a fascinating reference point for who he was away from the stage. This is where Otis lived — not the performer, but the man. A young father and husband who chose to put down roots in the Georgia countryside rather than relocate to a big city. It says a lot about where his heart was.
After the plane crash at Lake Monona in December 1967, Otis Redding was laid to rest on the grounds of his beloved ranch. His grave is marked by a simple marble monument surrounded by the peaceful countryside he loved. The ranch remains privately owned by the Redding family.
The Big O Ranch is private property and not open for general visits. However, the Redding family has occasionally opened the grounds for special events and anniversaries. If you are planning a trip to the Macon area, check with the Otis Redding Foundation for any upcoming events at the ranch. Please respect the family's privacy and do not attempt to visit without an invitation.
