Big Brother and the Holding Company formed in San Francisco in 1965 and rehearsed in a rented house in Lagunitas in West Marin County — a rural area north of the city that attracted the communal living experiments of the counterculture. When Janis Joplin joined the band in 1966, she transformed it from a competent psychedelic blues band into one of the most electric live acts in America. Her voice — raw, gospel-inflected, abandoned in a way that no white female singer had previously risked — was immediately shocking and immediately compelling. Their performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 introduced her to the world.
