What happened here?

On December 19, 1985, country outlaw Johnny Paycheck walked into the North High Lounge on North High Street in Hillsboro, Ohio — a small bar less than 20 miles from his hometown of Greenfield, where he was heading to visit his mother for the holidays.

After a local named Larry Wise recognised him and — either as a peace offering or a dig at his roots — invited him over for deer meat and turtle soup, Paycheck snapped "Do you see me as some kind of country hick?" and fired a shot that grazed Wise's scalp above the right eye. Found guilty in 1986, Paycheck was sentenced to 9½ years in prison, though he was released in 1991.

The North High Lounge is long gone. Today, 126 N High St is home to Single Office Stop (S.O.S.), an office supply store — a quiet end for a bar that earned its place in country music folklore.
