What happened here?

From October 1958 to March 1960, Elvis Presley served with the US Army's 3rd Armored Division in West Germany, stationed at the Ray Barracks in Friedberg. During this period he lived with his father Vernon, his grandmother Minnie Mae, and his entourage in rented accommodation at 14 Goethestrasse in Bad Nauheim — a spa town approximately 30 kilometres north of Frankfurt. It was in Bad Nauheim that Elvis met 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu, who would later become his wife. He was 24 at the time. Their relationship began during his stationing in Germany and was conducted largely at the Goethestrasse house.

Elvis's military service, which had interrupted his career at the precise moment he had become the most famous person in America, was a closely watched cultural event. His decision to serve without seeking deferment or a special entertainment posting was widely noted. He reportedly continued to perform informally for fellow soldiers and German fans, and his influence on European rock and roll was significant even during his absence from commercial recording. He was discharged in March 1960 and returned to the United States, where his next recording sessions produced 'It's Now or Never' and 'Are You Lonesome Tonight'.

The Goethestrasse house in Bad Nauheim is privately owned but is recognised as a heritage site and is visited by Elvis fans. The town has embraced the connection, and various commemorative plaques and markers note his presence. The Elvis-Presley-Platz in Bad Nauheim is named in his honour. The Ray Barracks in Friedberg, where he was stationed, have since closed.
