Get DirectionsAxl Rose grew up in Lafayette, Indiana, as William Bruce Rose Jr., later taking his stepfather's surname Bailey before eventually adopting the name Axl Rose. His childhood was turbulent — he has spoken about abuse at the hands of his stepfather and the strict Pentecostal household in which he was raised. Music became his escape. He sang in the church choir and discovered rock and roll as a teenager, forming early bands with childhood friend Izzy Stradlin, who grew up nearby.
Rose left Lafayette for Los Angeles in the early 1980s, hitchhiking and riding Greyhound buses to reach the Sunset Strip. The rage, pain, and restless energy of his Indiana upbringing poured directly into his vocal style and stage presence. Songs like "Welcome to the Jungle" and "My Michelle" were written from the perspective of a small-town kid thrown into the chaos of Hollywood, and the fury in his voice came from somewhere real. Lafayette gave him everything he needed to leave and never look back.
The childhood home is a private residence in a quiet neighbourhood in Lafayette. There is no plaque or marker, and the city's relationship with its most famous son has been complicated. Lafayette is a small college town — home to Purdue University — and a long way from the Sunset Strip. Izzy Stradlin grew up in the same area, and the two would eventually reunite in Los Angeles to form what became Guns N' Roses.
