What happened here?

Tim Bergling — the Swedish DJ and producer known as Avicii — was found dead in Muscat, Oman on April 20, 2018. He was 28 years old. His family confirmed that his death was a suicide, issuing a statement that described a young man 'who could not go on any longer' and 'wanted to find peace.' Avicii had retired from touring in 2016 at the age of 26, citing health problems including acute pancreatitis (partly caused by excessive drinking) and the mental health toll of relentless global touring.

Avicii was one of the most commercially successful electronic music artists in history. His breakthrough single 'Levels' (2011) became a global phenomenon, and his debut album True (2013) — which featured the country-EDM crossover hit 'Wake Me Up' — sold millions of copies and helped bring electronic dance music into the pop mainstream. He was a pioneer of the melodic, song-based approach to EDM that dominated the 2010s, and his collaborators included Chris Martin, Nile Rodgers, and Aloe Blacc.

Avicii's death at 28 intensified a growing conversation about mental health and burnout in the electronic music industry, where DJs routinely play hundreds of shows per year across multiple time zones. The Tim Bergling Foundation was established by his family to support mental health awareness and suicide prevention. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered privately. A memorial concert, Avicii Tribute Concert for Mental Health Awareness, was held at Friends Arena in Stockholm on December 5, 2019.
