What happened here?

The Annandale Hotel at 17 Parramatta Road was one of Sydney's most beloved live music venues for over three decades, a sweaty, intimate pub room where countless Australian bands cut their teeth. From the 1980s through its closure in 2013, the Annandale hosted early shows by acts including You Am I, Powderfinger, Silverchair, The Presets, and hundreds of others. The venue's small capacity (around 300) and energetic atmosphere made it the quintessential Sydney indie rock pub.

The Annandale represented the heart of Sydney's pub rock tradition — a uniquely Australian phenomenon where bands played multiple sets per night in hotel bars, building loyal local followings before graduating to larger venues. The pub's back room, accessible through the front bar, was a rite of passage for Sydney musicians. International touring acts also played here, drawn by the venue's reputation and intimate setting.

The Annandale Hotel closed as a live music venue in 2013 after a protracted battle with noise complaints and changing ownership. The building still stands on Parramatta Road in the inner-west suburb of Annandale and has been used for various purposes since. Its closure, along with several other Sydney venues, sparked the 'Sydney lockout laws' and live music advocacy campaigns. The Annandale remains a potent symbol of what Sydney's live music scene has lost.
