Get DirectionsA large mural of Amy Winehouse adorns a wall in Camden Market — the north London neighbourhood that was her spiritual home and the place she returned to throughout her life and career. Winehouse was a Camden girl in the most complete sense: she drank in its pubs, shopped in its market, lived in nearby flats, and the neighbourhood's louche, bohemian character matched her own perfectly. After her death on July 23, 2011, Camden became the primary site of public mourning in London, with fans gathering at the market and at her nearby home on Camden Square to leave flowers, notes, and bottles of her favourite drinks.
Winehouse's two albums — "Frank" (2003) and "Back to Black" (2006) — were separated by a transformation that remains one of the most dramatic in British music. "Back to Black" drew on 1960s girl-group soul, Phil Spector production, and Winehouse's own plainspoken, often brutally honest lyrics about love, addiction, and self-destruction. It produced "Rehab," "Tears Dry on Their Own," "Back to Black," and "Valerie" (with Mark Ronson), won five Grammy Awards in 2008, and sold over twenty million copies worldwide. Her voice — a contralto of extraordinary character, technically precise and emotionally unguarded — was one of the great instruments of her generation.
The Camden mural has been repainted and updated several times since her death. A bronze statue of Winehouse was also unveiled in Camden Stable Market in 2014, sculpted by Scott Eaton. Both the mural and the statue are visited daily by fans from around the world. The flat on Camden Square where she died is a private residence marked by the attendance of fans who continue to leave tributes.
