What happened here?

Amy Winehouse was found dead at her home at 30 Camden Square in north London on 23 July 2011. She was 27 years old. The cause of death was accidental alcohol poisoning — her blood alcohol level was more than five times the legal drink-drive limit. Winehouse had been struggling with alcohol and drug addiction for years, and had made multiple attempts at treatment. She had recently returned from a troubled European tour that had been largely abandoned after poor performances in Belgrade drew international attention to the state of her health. The circumstances of her death added her to the cultural phenomenon of the 27 Club alongside Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Kurt Cobain.

Winehouse had been deeply identified with Camden throughout her career. She had grown up in Southgate in north London but moved to Camden as a young woman, and the neighbourhood's particular combination of markets, music venues, pub culture, and bohemian energy matched her personality and her music. She was a familiar figure in Camden's pubs and at the Dublin Castle, an early venue for her performances. Her visual style — the beehive hair, the cat-eye eyeliner, the tattoos — became inseparable from the Camden aesthetic of the 2000s.

The Camden Square address is a private residential property. A bronze statue of Winehouse was unveiled in Stables Market in Camden in 2014, sculpted by Scott Eaton, and has become the primary physical memorial to her in the neighbourhood. The statue depicts her in full performance pose with microphone stand and her characteristic beehive. Camden Town is easily reached on the Northern line and its market, venues, and Winehouse connections make it one of London's most visited areas for music heritage.
