What happened here?

On the night of July 30, 1954, a 19-year-old Elvis Presley took the stage at the Overton Park Shell — an open-air stone amphitheater in the middle of Memphis's Overton Park — as an opening act for country singer Slim Whitman. It was his first paid public performance, coming just weeks after he had recorded "That's All Right" at Sun Studio. Elvis was so nervous that he unconsciously stood on the balls of his feet and shook his leg to the music. The girls in the audience went berserk.

Many music historians mark that night as one of the first true rock 'n' roll concerts. The leg-shaking became Elvis's signature move — not a calculated piece of showmanship but something that spilled out of him in a moment of stage fright and never left. By the end of the summer, he was playing to increasingly wild crowds across the South, his reputation spreading from that first nervous night in the park.

The Overton Park Shell — now known as the Levitt Shell — is still standing and still hosting concerts. Restored to its 1936 grandeur, it holds a free outdoor music series each year and remains one of the most historically significant music venues in America. A marker commemorates Elvis's debut, and the stage where it all began looks much as it did that July night seventy years ago.
