What happened here?

Albert Studios at 9 Rangers Road in Neutral Bay, Sydney, was the recording facility run by Albert Productions -- the music company founded by the Alberts family and managed by Harry Vanda and George Young -- where AC/DC recorded their foundational Australian albums in the mid-1970s. High Voltage (1975), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976), Let There Be Rock (1977), and Powerage (1978) were all recorded here, giving the studio a claim to being one of the most important rooms in Australian rock history. George Young, older brother of Malcolm and Angus, was one of the two producers at the helm.

Albert Productions was the dominant force in Australian pop and rock music from the early 1970s onward. Harry Vanda and George Young, who had themselves been members of the Easybeats in the 1960s, developed as producers at Albert and worked with an extraordinary roster of Australian acts including John Paul Young (whose 'Love Is in the Air' they produced), Rose Tattoo, and the early AC/DC. The Rangers Road studio had a specific sonic character that suited hard rock recording, and the Vanda-Young production approach -- direct, powerful, no excess -- shaped the AC/DC sound as much as the band's own playing.

Albert Productions eventually moved its operations and the Rangers Road studio in its original form no longer operates. The legacy of what was recorded there is, however, enormous -- the early AC/DC records made at Neutral Bay are the foundation of one of the most successful catalogues in rock history. The Neutral Bay address is documented in AC/DC biographies and is a stop on the Sydney AC/DC heritage trail for fans who want to locate where the sound came from.
