The AC/DC House

6 Lansdowne Road in East St Kilda was the shared house where members of AC/DC lived early in the band's career after relocating from Sydney to Melbourne. The address became legendary for its 24-hour parties and was the base from which the band wrote many of their early hits. It was here that the Young brothers and their bandmates lived the chaotic, full-throttle lifestyle that fed directly into the music.

Melbourne and AC/DC

Although AC/DC began in Sydney — where Malcolm and Angus Young grew up in Burwood after emigrating from Scotland — the band's early career was built on relentless gigging across Melbourne's pub circuit. The move to Melbourne put them at the centre of Australia's live rock scene, and the Lansdowne Road house was their home base during this formative period. The energy of those years — the constant touring, the communal living, the writing sessions between gigs — shaped the band's identity as a live act before studio success followed.

Visiting

The house at 6 Lansdowne Road has been demolished and is no longer standing. However, the street and the surrounding East St Kilda neighbourhood offer a fascinating insight into the area where AC/DC came up — the pubs, the streets, and the inner-suburban Melbourne landscape that shaped the band during their formative years. The broader St Kilda area is known for its beach, Luna Park, and the Esplanade Hotel — another venue closely associated with Melbourne's live music history.
